The Society was established in 2018 with a commitment to preserving, promoting and protecting the draught horse breeds that form part of South Africa’s equestrian and agricultural heritage.

The Society represents four breeds: Clydesdales, Shires, Gypsy Vanners and Draught Cross horses.

We aim to bring together breeders, owners and enthusiasts who share a passion for these magnificent horses and a desire to see their future secured in South Africa.

OUR PURPOSE

Draught horses have played an important role in the development of South Africa. They worked on farms, transported goods, supported industry and became an important part of communities across the country.

Today, their role may have changed, but their value has not.

The Draught Horse Society is committed to ensuring that these breeds remain a living part of our country’s heritage. Through responsible breeding, registration, showing, education and the promotion of draught horses, the Society works to encourage their continued development and appreciation.

OUR BREEDS

The Society is proud to represent four distinct types of draught horse:

Clydesdales
Known for their strength, elegance and distinctive feathering, Clydesdales have a long and important history in South Africa.

Shires
One of the world’s great heavy horse breeds, Shires are recognised for their size, strength, calm nature and impressive presence.

Gypsy Vanners
Beautiful, versatile and distinctive, Gypsy Vanners have become increasingly appreciated for their character, movement and versatility.

Draught Cross
Draught Cross horses combine the qualities of draught horses with other breeds, creating versatile horses suited to a variety of disciplines and purposes.
